Ravn Alaska, an air marketing brand operated by Corvus Airlines and formerly known as Alaska Structures Inc, has recently selected Universal Avionics, an international company primarily focused on cockpit instrument displays and Flight Management Systems, for their MFD-890R Multi-Function Display (MFD). Integrations are currently taking place at Avmax in Calgary through the Engineering Division in order to provide weather and critical flight safety information to Dash 8 operators.

The MFD-890R offers regional airline operators with previously unavailable packages for terrain, weather, and obstacle awareness. The MFD-890R is also Night Vision Imaging compatible, which happens to be convenient for the increasing numbers of Dash 8/Qs being deployed for special operations. This Multi-Function Display is also capable of displaying video from mission systems and infrared and electro-optical sensors.

“Universal Avionics is working with regionals to provide Multi-Function Displays and a navigation system with high-resolution mapping, traffic, weather and terrain,” said the Regional Sales Manager for Universal Avionics Canada, Norm Matheis. “The end of life for the obsolete Primus 800 radar in the Dash 8/Q is driving this today…The MFD-890R with a new modern radar provides the basis for a level of SA not available until now for Dash 8/Q operators. The ability to now see the projected flight path with TCAS traffic is a powerful safety tool.”

“The advanced MFD system provides an important level of situational awareness to complement increased navigational performance upgrades available for the Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS onboard the Dash 8/Q Series,” said the Airlines Sales Manager for Latin America and USA at Universal Avionics, Robert Kline. “Operators will be better able to achieve high levels of navigation performance.”
