The hot section of any turbofan or turboprop airplane is key in producing thrust, the seminal force used in flight. It is a collection of important engine parts such as the turbine blades, combustion chamber, stators, vane rings, compressor turbine disk, and shroud segments. As these are crucial components to the performance of the engine, hot section inspections are imperative in ensuring the reliable performance of your aircraft.
Generally speaking, a hot section inspection (HSI) should be performed when the engine’s use reaches the halfway point in its time between overhauls (TBO). For example, if the TBO is 3,000 hours, the HSI should be carried out at 1,500 hours of use. TBO will vary from engine to engine, but it is specified in any aircraft’s maintenance manual. An HSI that takes place after a fixed amount of use is known as a “hard time” HSI. However, advances in engine monitoring systems have made it possible for HSIs to be done only as needed. The monitoring systems analyze the engine’s performance and produce data to indicate whether an HSI is necessary or not.
HSIs are relatively quick and painless operations for the majority of aircraft. It typically involves opening up the hot section module and examining the parts with both standard and specialized tools depending on the type of engine. HSIs of larger and more complex engines, on the other hand, often require the engine to be removed completely and sent back to the manufacturer for inspection.
HSI are also very helpful in reducing cost because it allows operators to pinpoint small problems before they become larger issues. For instance, if an HSI exposes a small crack in a certain aircraft engine part, the operator can fix it immediately before the crack expands, eventually rendering the entire part obsolete. This is just one reason why aircraft engine inspections are so important. While being overly careful in regards to proper airplane engine maintenance might be an annoying expense, it is highly beneficial in the long run.
