The Difference Between Various Aircraft Part Conditions

When procuring the various aircraft parts that you need for your operations, one may find that there are numerous types of part conditions that are listed alongside products. Generally, these include factory new, new material, new surplus, overhauled, serviceable, as removed, and refurbished conditions, all of which are very important to know prior to making a purchasing decision. This is because there are major differences between some conditions, and there may be times when a certain part condition must be used to fulfill a particular requirement. In this blog, we will discuss each of the common conditions for aircraft parts, allowing you to ensure that you always procure exactly what you require.

Factory New (FN)

Factory new parts are fairly straightforward, being those that are obtained directly from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), an authorized distributor, or another legitimate source. When purchasing factory new items, such products will always be shipped alongside an OEM trace which may be composed of manufacturer certificates of compliance or certificates of compliance from the authorized distributor with tracing.

New Material (NE)

New materials also regularly come from the OEM, an authorized distributor, or other legitimate sources. While often lacking the manufacturer certification, such items come alongside Certificates of Conformance (COC). NE parts may also lack the complete trace of the item, but shall be free of any functional or cosmetic defects and will be packaged without prior use or alteration.

New Surplus (NS)

New surplus parts are those that come from excess inventory, sometimes coming with a trace when the item is an abstract electronic sourced from commercial or government surplus. New surplus parts are guaranteed to have no evidence of prior assembly or use, though may have been handled, aged, or deteriorated due to time. Nevertheless, these issues are always conveyed to the customer ahead of time during the quotation process.

Overhauled (OH)

When an item is in overhauled condition, it has been rebuilt and tested against the manufacturer specifications that have been approved by a repair facility. When purchasing such parts, they will typically include all testing and recertification documentation. It is important to know that overhauled parts may still exhibit signs of handling or storage mishaps, alongside deterioration as a result of aging.

Serviceable (SV)

Serviceable parts are similar to OH parts, having been tested and repaired by an approved repair facility in accordance to manufacturer specifications. Serviceable parts are capable of being installed and used on a system, and those that are beyond their service life are known as unserviceable parts.

As Removed (AR)

As removed parts may be aircraft parts, marine vessel components, or other items that have been extracted from vehicles or assemblies. Such parts may be able to function without issue, though are not guaranteed for quality. Additionally, removed parts are not guaranteed to be repaired or tested to approved standards, and as such can be considered “as is” parts.

Refurbished (RFB)

As the final major condition category, refurbished parts are those extracted from equipment for reuse. For the means of upholding appearance and cosmetics, such parts may be refurbished. Refurbished parts follow much of the same lack of guarantees that As Removed parts do, albeit with minor cosmetic enhancements. It is important to differentiate RFB parts and OH parts as well, as the two differ in terms of rebuilding and testing.
