Navy Fighters

To carry out the operations and roles of the United States Navy, the Armed Forces branch deploys over 3,700 operational fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. These aircraft are carrier based and are used to strike enemy forces on land and sea, protect allies, conduct search and rescue, transport troops and supplies, undertake special operations, and more. Fighter aircraft are a specific type of military fixed-wing aircraft that are used to establish air superiority through air-to-air combat against enemy aircraft. To establish this advantage, fighter aircraft are specifically designed to excel at speed, maneuverability, and firepower. The Navy currently carries a number of fighter aircraft including the F-5 Tigershark and the F-35C Lightning II, just to name a few.

The F-5 Tigershark was manufactured by Northrop Grumman and was first flown in 1974. The F-5 Tigershark comes in two models, those being the one seater F-5N and two seater F-5F. The F-5N serves as a trainer for both fighter and attack aircraft operations, and allows for combat tactic training. The F-5F model is a two seater fighter that boasts high maneuverability with special flaps. The armament of the F-5 Tigershark consists of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles that are on wingtip launchers.

The F-35C Lightning II is another Navy aircraft that was manufactured by Lockheed Martin, serving to replace the F/A-18C/D Hornet as the primary offensive fighter. The F-35C Lightning II is capable of catapult launches and fly-in arrestments due to its design with larger wings and more capable landing gear. The aircraft also carries an armament of a 25 mm GAU-22/A, 2 AIM-120C air-to-air missiles, and 2 GBU-31 JDAMs. While Lockheed Martin serves as the main contractor for the F-35C Lightning II, both BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman are principal partners in the project.
