The United States Navy is a service branch of the United States Armed Forces that provides for naval warfare, power projection, nuclear deterrence, and sealift. To conduct their operations, the Navy employs over 330,000 active duty personnel, 101,000 ready reserve personnel, 290 deployable ships, and 3,700 operational aircraft. The aircraft inventory of the United States is robust, serving as the third largest airforce in the world. Navy aircraft may be used to strike targets, protect friendly forces, perform search and rescue, and much more. The aircraft that are used by the Navy fall into various categories, and these include combat, AWACS, electronic warfare, maritime patrol, transport, helicopter, and trainer aircraft.
The Boeing EA-18G is an electronic warfare aircraft that serves as a specialized version of the F/A-18F Super Hornet, another widely used aircraft by the Navy. The EA-18G Growler contains an ALQ-218 receiver, ALQ-99 jamming pods, communication countermeasures, and satellite communication capability, making it useful for electronic warfare operations. It also contains weaponry including AIM-120 and AGM-88 HARM missiles. Since their first flight in 2006, the EA-18G has participated in a variety of operations over the years. Currently, there are over 150 EA-18G units in active service under the United States Navy.
The E-2C Hawkeye is an airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft that is manufactured by Northrop Grumman and has 88 units currently in service. The E-2C Hawkeye has been in service since 1973 and had achieved one million hours of flight in 2004. To conduct operations, the E-2C Hawkeye has an auto-detection radar, airborne computers, and a memory and data link system. The radar of the E-2C is immensely powerful, capable of detecting targets within three million cubic miles. When detected, the E-2C can simultaneously track over 600 targets and control 40 airborne intercepts.
