Marine Corps Fighters

The United States Marine Corps, otherwise referred to as the United States Marines, are a branch of the United States Armed Forces that conduct amphibious and expeditionary warfare. As of 2018, the United States Marine Corps employs over 1,300 manned aircraft for their operations. The rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft of the United States Marine Corps provide for close air support and assault support for ground forces. When conducting air-to-air combat against other aircraft, fighter aircraft are primarily used. Fighter aircraft are set apart from other types due to their firepower, maneuverability, and speed that allow them to establish air superiority. Within the Marine Corps, two common fighters include the F/A-18C/D Hornet and the F-35B Lightning II.

The F/A-18C/D Hornet is an aircraft that was manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and Northrop and is a multirole combat jet with a twin engine configuration. The F/A-18 has a strong service history, breaking tactical aircraft records during Operation Desert Storm in terms of availability, reliability, and maintainability. The F/A-18 excels in combat, containing an armament of an M61A1/A2, AIM 7 Sparrow, AIM 9 Sidewinder, Maverick Missiles, harpoon, and more. The F/A-18 has also demonstrated great survivability, recovering successfully after direct surface-to-air missile hits.

The F-35B Lightning II is a fighter aircraft that was produced by Lockheed Martin. The F-35B Lightning II has the capability of short takeoff/vertical landing in addition to landing on long runways, expanding upon the range of its use. The F-35 also contains an armament of air-to-air missiles and GBU-32 JDAM guided bombs. Currently, the Marine Corps is replacing their inventory of AV-8B Harrier IIs with the F-35B Lightning II model. One of the major benefits of the F-35B Lightning II is its ability to enter enemy territory and be undetected by radars that would commonly spot 4th generation fighters.
