Marine Corps Attack Aircraft

The United States Marine Corps is a branch of the United States Armed Forces that conducts amphibious and expeditionary warfare. To best carry out their objectives, the Marine Corps employs a variety of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft which serve for assault and close air support. For combat operations, the United States Marine Corps uses attack aircraft such as the F/A-18C/D Hornet, F-35B Lightning II, and AH-1W Super Cobra.

The F/A-18C/D Hornet is an aircraft that is used by the United States Marine Corps and Navy, and they may be used as attack or fighter units. As an attack unit, the F/A-18C/D Hornet provides for force projection, close air support, and interdiction. As a fighter, the F/A-18C/D Hornet is used for fighter escort and fleet air defense. The F/A-18C/D Hornet has actively served in conflict, providing for air superiority and surface bombing during Operation Desert Storm.

The F-35B Lightning II is an aircraft produced by Lockheed Martin and is set to replace the current AV-8B Harrier II models within the Marine Corps inventory. The F-35B Lightning II is capable of short takeoff/vertical landing and has an armament of air-to-air missiles and guided bombs for defense and combat. A major advantage of the F-35B Lightning II is its stealth capabilities. During ground target operations, the F-35B Lightning II can often enter areas without radar detection that 4th generation fighters cannot avoid. This allows for the aircraft to engage targets to complete an objective without detection.

The AH-1W Super Cobra is a Bell Helicopter manufactured rotorcraft that features a 20 mm M197 Gatling cannon, TOW missiles, Hydra 70 rockets, AGM-114 Hellfire, Zuni rockets, and an AIM-9 Sidewinder for weaponry. As the world’s first attack helicopter, the AH-1W Super Cobra has been used by the Marines since 1986. For operations, the AH-1W Super Cobra is most often used for close air support for Marines.
