Important Steps to Change Aircraft Engine Oil by Yourself

Whether you are a pilot or just the owner of a plane the FAA allows you to change your aircraft oil, by yourself. If you’ve ever wondered how to get the process rolling and what tools you made to need to have a successful job, keep on reading.

Generally, oil is changed every twenty-five hours if your engine does not have a filter, and ever fifty hours if your engine does come equipped with a filter. So, why should you be changing your oil frequently?

When you change the oil on your engine you help your engine and aircraft stay healthy, happy and in tip-top shape. New oil allows the internal temperature of the engine to stay love, it keeps debris and harmful sludge from messing with your aircraft engine, new oil is excellent at absorbing shock and it also helps ease friction and creates a seal inside the engine.

When looking for an oil that will work with your engine, you can’t just pick any old bottle up from the auto-store. Temperature needs to be taken into consideration. If your aircraft is often flying in colder weather, you’ll want an oil that is thinner at room temperature.

When the weather is warmer, an oil that is single-grade is a good option. This oil thickens up at lower temperatures, which allows the engine to stay lubricated as the temperature changes around it.

Now that you have an idea of what oil you will need, you’re ready to learn how to change it. You want the oil to be warmed up from a pre-draining flight. Remove the cowl and panels to access the oil filter. Place a pan of bucket below the drain and let the oil slowly ooze out.

Once the oil is clear, you can install an annular washer and replace the oil that was drained. Reinstall all the parts you originally took off and you should be good to go. Remember, all aircrafts are different and if you’re not sure about something, ask a professional first.
