To enact their operations, the United States Coast Guard deploys a number of marine vessels, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. Helicopters that are employed by the Coast Guard may be used for a variety of missions including search and rescue, intercepting illicit drug vessels, providing defense, and more. Some of the common, in-service helicopters within the Coast Guard include the Aérospatiale HH-65 Dolphin and the Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk.
The HH-65 Dolphin, or MH-65 Dolphin, is a helicopter that is used by the United States Coast Guard and features a twin-engine configuration. As a replacement for the Sikorsky HH-52A Sea Guard, the Dolphin is primarily employed for search and rescue missions and can carry a crew of four. Beyond search and rescue, the Dolphin also proves beneficial for military readiness, homeland security patrols, drug interdiction, cargo transportation, pollution control, and ice breaking. Since their introduction to the market in 1985, 182 units have been produced, all of which are currently in service under the United States Coast Guard.
The Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk is another Coast Guard helicopter that is medium range and has the primary objectives of search and rescue, law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and military readiness. The Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk is capable of a 140 kn speed for an average of six to seven hours, and they may seat up to four crew members. If needed, the MH-60 may also allow for an extra six additional people with a reduced operational range. The Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk contains some armaments for defense, and these may be a 7.62 mm M240H medium machine gun and a Barrett M82 semi-automatic rifle.
