While the United States Coast Guard relies on a number of vessels for their operations, they also employ a variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft as well. With over 200 aircraft currently in service, the Coast Guard conducts search and rescues, interception of smuggling vessels, and self-defense against small arms fire. Within their service inventory, the Coast Guard deploys 102 Airbus MH-65 Dolphins, 42 Sikorsky MH-60T Jayhawks, 27 Lockheed HC-130 Hercules, and other aircraft.
The Eurocopter MH-65 Dolphin is a search and rescue helicopter used by the United States Coast Guard for medevac-capable search and rescue and armed Airborne Use of Force Missions. Since their first flight in 1980, 102 units have been constructed for the United States Coast Guard and are all currently in service. The helicopter typically seats four members which are the pilot, copilot, flight mechanic, and rescue swimmer for short range recovery. Beyond search and rescue, the MH-65 Dolphin may also be used for homeland security patrols, military readiness, drug interdiction, and more.
The Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk is another recovery helicopter, operating with medium range. Beyond search and rescue, the United States Coast Guard utilizes the MH-60 Jayhawk for law enforcement, marine environmental protection missions, and military readiness. With a defensive armament, six seat hoisting capacity, and convertibility, the Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk is a useful rotorcraft.
The Lockheed HC-130 is an extended-range search & rescue and maritime reconnaissance fixed-wing aircraft. 18 HC-130H units are currently based in CGAS Clearwater, CGAS Kodiak, and CGAS Barbers Point and are used for search and rescue, illegal drug interdiction, military readiness, cargo and personnel transportation, enforcement of laws and treaties, and many other operations. While some HC-130 units are able to be used for aerial refueling, the Coast Guard variants are incapable of such procedures.
