The 6 Most Popular and Common Types of Bearings

Bearings are some of the most common mechanical elements in any machine or system. Typically, bearings are components used between two other components that allow for rotational and/or linear movement, while reducing friction and increasing efficiency. This is based on the simple idea that things roll better than they slide.
Typically, all bearings follow the same concept, they use balls and rollers to help “bear the load”. Still, there are many different types of bearings, each with their own purpose and applications. The 6 most popular are plain bearings, rolling element bearings, jewel bearings, fluid bearings, magnetic bearings, and flexure bearings.
-
Plain bearings are the simplest and generally the cheapest bearings, but they have a high-load carrying capacity and longer life. They’re composed of just a bearing surface and no rolling element.
-
Rolling element bearings have balls or roller set between two rings or races, they are generally divided into two categories: ball bearings and roller bearings. Ball bearings can handle smaller radial and thrust loads, while roller bearings can handle heavier radial loads but little thrust loads.
-
Jewel bearings can handle radial loads by rolling the axle slightly off-center. They are plain bearings with the addition of a turning metal spindle in a jewel-lined pivot hole.
-
Fluid bearings are used in high-load, high-speed, or high-precision applications that normally would use ball bearings if not for decreased performance from increased vibrations and noise. Fluid bearings have a thin layer of gas or liquid to support their load.
-
Magnetic bearings use continuous power to generate a magnetic field to support moving parts without physical contact. They are commonly found in industrial machines like generators, motors, and turbines.
-
Flexure bearings have high resistance to fatigue, allowed them to repeatedly bend. They are like hinges and support two parts in which motion is supported by a load element.
